Frequently asked questions

How much money do you need to retire in India?

It depends mostly on what you spend and when you stop working. Under FinPlann's assumptions (6% inflation, a 7% return after retirement and money lasting to age 90), you need about 26 times your first year's spending if you retire at 60, 30 times at 55 and 33.5 times at 50. The retirement guides turn this into corpus tables and the monthly SIP that gets you there.

Does the 4% rule work in India?

Not as is. The 4% rule (25 times your spending) comes from US data with lower inflation. With Indian inflation, the same 30-year retirement needs a bigger multiple, and early retirement needs more again. The FIRE and retirement guides explain the maths.

Should I fill EPF, NPS or PPF first?

For most salaried employees EPF is already happening automatically and earns a rate set each year. NPS adds a deduction under the old regime and an employer contribution that counts under both regimes, but locks most of the money until 60. PPF is the flexible, tax-free option for the self-employed or as a top-up. The NPS vs EPF and retirement products guides compare them.
