Frequently asked questions

What is an ETF?

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a mutual fund whose units trade on the stock exchange like shares. Most ETFs in India copy an index, such as the Nifty 50, or hold gold or silver. You need a demat and trading account to buy them, and you pay the market price during trading hours.

Are ETFs cheaper than index funds?

Usually on the expense ratio. The large Nifty 50 ETFs charged 0.03–0.05% a year in September 2026, against 0.10–0.29% for Direct plans of Nifty 50 index funds (AMFI data). ETFs add brokerage, the bid-ask spread and demat charges, so for small monthly investments an index fund can work out similar. Our ETF vs index fund calculator shows the difference for your amount.

How many ETFs are there in India?

AMFI's August 2026 data lists 267 equity ETFs, plus gold, silver, debt and international ETFs. Many are small and thinly traded, so size and trading volume matter when choosing one.

How are ETFs taxed in India?

Equity ETFs are taxed like equity funds: 20% on gains within 12 months and 12.5% on long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year. Gold, silver and international ETFs listed in India are taxed at 12.5% after 12 months and at your slab rate before that, with no ₹1.25 lakh exemption. These rules apply to units sold from 1 April 2025.
