Frequently asked questions

What is Tax Year 2026-27?

It is the year from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the same period as the old FY 2026-27. The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced "previous year" and "assessment year" with a single "tax year" from 1 April 2026, and renumbered most sections, so 80C, 80D and 24(b) now have new numbers. FinPlann's guides give both.

Which tax regime is the default?

The new regime is the default. Salaried taxpayers without business income can choose the old regime each year when they file. Under the new regime, a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax after the standard deduction and rebate; the old regime only wins if your deductions are large. The new vs old regime guide has a break-even table by salary.

Do NRIs pay income tax in India?

On income earned or received in India, such as rent, NRO interest, or gains on Indian shares, funds and property. Income earned abroad is not taxed in India while you are a non-resident. Where both countries tax the same income, the tax treaty (DTAA) gives relief, and RNOR status can extend that protection for a few years after you return.
