Frequently asked questions

How much term insurance do I need?

Enough to replace your income for the years your family depends on it, plus any loans, minus what you have already saved. Ten times your income is a common shortcut, but it can be far off in either direction. The term insurance calculator and guide work it out from your own numbers.

Can NRIs buy term insurance in India?

Yes. NRIs can buy term cover from any life insurer registered with IRDAI; RBI's FEMA rules on insurance allow policies for people living outside India. How the claim can be paid out abroad depends on how the premiums were paid, which the NRI term insurance guide explains.

How big should an emergency fund be?

About 4 months of essential expenses for a household with two steady incomes, 6 months with one salary, and 9 to 12 months if your income is irregular. Keep the first month or two in a savings account and the rest somewhere you can reach within a day, such as a liquid fund.
