On 31 Dec 2015 one UAE dirham cost ₹18.01. Today it costs ₹26.38, so the rupee has lost about 3.6% a year against it on average. That steady slide is why money you keep in AED tends to grow when you bring it home, and why rupee goals abroad, such as a degree, get dearer each year.

For NRIs in the UAE

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar, so the dirham-rupee rate moves almost exactly with the dollar-rupee rate. If the rupee weakens against the dollar, it weakens against the dirham by the same amount.

The UAE does not tax salaries, and as an NRI your UAE salary is not taxed in India either. Money you send home is usually kept in an NRE account: it can be moved back freely and its interest is tax-free in India. Interest on NRO accounts (for Indian income such as rent) is taxed in India.

Most transfers go through banks or exchange houses. Compare the rate you are quoted with the rate on this page: the gap is the margin you are paying, on top of any fee.

Planning to move back? The Return to India planner shows whether your savings last at today's rate, and the residential status check shows how your income is taxed in the years around the move.

Rates for older dates are the European Central Bank's daily reference rates (the dirham is derived from the dollar at the 3.6725 peg); recent days are mid-market rates from ExchangeRate-API. For planning only, not for trading or transfers.
